Gardeners,

Last week we nearly finished transplanting cool-weather seedlings. Overnight rain Friday helped the seedlings settle in. Work sessions were spirited and productive. We removed most of the remaining tomato and squash plants and carefully disposed of the spent plants away from the garden to keep them out of the compost piles.

What we harvested: the last of the tomatoes, a few potatoes, winter squash, banana peppers, shishito peppers, lunch box peppers, and herbs.

We also mowed outside the garden, built a new compost pile, weeded throughout the garden, watered daily, and pulled and stored t-posts.

The week ahead:

• Water

• Transplant remaining half-flat of lettuce seedlings

• Weed

• Harvest

• Pull and store trellis materials

• Re-stake irrigation posts

• Begin mulching new seedlings

• Spread compost around berry bushes and vines

• Work in organic supplements to garden beds

Garden needs:

• volunteers with pickup trucks to help with manure and leaves hauling

• dibbles

• seeds of your favorite cool-weather crops

Items of Note

Last Tuesday students from a Food and Sovereignty class at Guilford College toured the garden. The class hopes to return to the garden later in the semester!

We will soon have a flyer out for our October 11 social on the hillside. If you know someone who would like to play live music (bluegrass or something with a similar vibe), let us know!

We are excited to plan a day to see everyone and celebrate the garden. This will not be a fundraiser, just a time to commune with one another.

We can really use extra hands in the garden during these next few weeks. Join us if you can. You’ll get community, sunlight, and even some fresh produce that isn’t subject to these crazy recalls we’ve been seeing!
