Greetings Gardeners!

The heat remains daunting, but we are determined. Many thanks to Richard for keeping the garden watered throughout the week. If local gardeners are able to run down there at any point in the week, the plants will sure appreciate an extra soak.

The team got a lot done despite the weather. We watered, turned piles, trained and suckered tomato plants, weeded, and harvested. Berries are ripening fast while cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes are just becoming ready for harvest. If you can believe it, fall seedlings are already being ordered! Things sure do move fast in the garden.

We'll meet this week on Wednesday at 5:30 and on Saturday at 8:30 for work sessions.

The week ahead:

• Weed

• Turn compost piles

• Harvest

• Stake and tie up climbing vegetables

• Continue tying and suckering tomato plants

Garden needs:

• 6' ladder

• pepper plant supports

• organic manure

• 2-3 dibbles

• kitchen scraps

This Saturday, June 20th from 9am-12pm, Alamance Parks is hosting a Volunteer Day at Sax Island Park. The work will include spiffing up the front gate, kiosks, park benches, and the outdoor classroom. Please come out and lend a hand if you’re able!

We’re considering the idea of hosting a “Music in the Garden” series monthly, starting in the fall. People and plants get a lot of benefit out of hearing live music. Music can increase a plant’s growth, as this article details. I can’t think of a more beautiful thing than tunes floating over our hillside beds. Stay tuned for more info!
