Sax Patch Community,

Last week brought plenty of dry weather and baking sun. The garden is more than ready for a good drink, and we're hoping the rain in the forecast makes its way to us. Join us for work sessions this week!

We kept busy around the garden last week, watering, turning the compost piles, and adjusting irrigation stakes. We also cleared away the last of the trellis material, spruced up the asparagus beds, and stayed on top of the weeds. To welcome the cooler days ahead, we tucked mustard, beet, cilantro and radish seeds into the ground and are looking forward to seeing some fall color and growth in the weeks to come.

We’ll meet on Wednesday at 5:30 and on Saturday at 8:30 this week for work sessions.

The week ahead:

• Begin lettuce harvest

• Sow

• Turn compost piles

• Weed

• Water as needed

• Mulch berry vines

• Mow

• Mulch new plantings

Garden needs:

• pickup trucks for leaves and manure hauling

• dibbles

• new pruning shears (we’re getting a little dull out here)

Items of Note

Working Landscapes, along with Dan Settles of Settles Farm and Steve McCalla of Rocky Ridge Farm, will host a FREE workshop on biochar production featuring a hands-on demonstration of the Ring of Fire biochar kiln, which is available to rent from Working Landscapes.

Dan will also lead a tour of his agroforestry plantings, and a free lunch featuring locally sourced ingredients will be provided.

The 41st annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference is scheduled for Oct. 31 - Nov. 1 in Winston-Salem. The conference is always full of good presentations, keynote talks, and opportunities to meet other gardeners. Check out this link to learn more!

Our fall garden gathering (not a fundraiser, just a fun time) is set for Sunday, Oct. 11 from 12-3pm. Potluck, tunes, and plenty of garden fun.
